Alex has become strong enough to go up the stairs. He has not gone down yet and won't until he has mastered the "up" portion. This is why he is going up the back stairs. When he gets to the top he is on the main level of the house.
Alex has finally made it back to his room upstairs. He goes up and back down a couple of times a day. He says to never take for granted your ability to go up and down stairs.

Alex's balance has improved so much that he is able to walk along the kitchen counter with only one help assisting him. It has been 14 months since his injury which resulted in a traumatic brain injury.
